Dry Brushing

Is dry body brushing already a part of your beauty regimen? Here's why it should be.

Dry brushing, the act of brushing over dry skin, is a natural health practice that stimulates the connective tissue attached to the capillaries sitting under the skin, to improve circulation traveling to the heart. It assists the lymphatic flow around the body, ridding the body of toxins and waste. Research also suggests that dry brushing helps reduce cellulite by speeding up metabolism, which helps break down fatty deposits or toxins within the blood stream that often cause cellulite.






Regular dry skin brushing exfoliates dry, rough skin, enabling moisturizing products to more readily absorb into the skin. It assists with stimulation of sweat and oil glands, contributing to the restoration of moist, supple skin. It strengthens pores by assisting with increased skin tone. And it gently stretches connective tissue to help regenerate production of collagen and elastin fibers. It's great to dry brush when you awaken, to help you get rid of that feeling of sluggishness, and helps your body come alive.

If you add essential oils into your daily dry brushing routine it has some additional benefits. It can help decrease the appearance of cellulite.







GREAT OILS FOR DRY BRUSHING:


REDUCING SKIN PUFFINESS Fennel, Juniper Berry, and Geranium purify the skin and help decrease puffiness.

  • Juniper Berry’s diuretic properties reduce fluid retention while its cleansing properties stimulate circulation and the lymph system to help the body clear out waste.

  • Fennel is often used to relieve digestive upsets, like indigestion, cramps and gas. Those cleansing actions also help flush out toxins and decrease water retention.

  • Geranium acts as a diuretic and stimulates circulation and lymphatic flow to reduce puffiness and water retention.


SKIN-TONING Rosemary, Grapefruit, and Cypress (this month's POM) help tone the skin to lift sagging tissue, improve the texture of the skin, and give a smoother appearance to the skin.

  • Grapefruit, known for its toning, and tightening, refreshes the skin while toning sagging tissue. Grapefruit oil contains bromelain, an anti-inflammatory enzyme that can help break down cellulite. And inhaling grapefruit can also reduce food cravings.

  • Rosemary, a strong astringent, is used topically to stimulate circulation, clear out lymphatic blockages, and tone and tighten the skin.

  • Cypress‘ astringent properties tackle cellulite by drying, strengthening, and toning the skin. And like Juniper Berry, it clears out excess fluids and boosts circulation.


STIMULATING Lemongrass, Black Pepper, Cedarwood and Cinnamon Bark stimulate and energize the skin and get the fluids flowing.

  • The uplifting scent of Lemongrass is refreshing and energizing. Used topically, the oil stimulates blood flow while also relaxing the muscles.

  • Spicy Black Pepper oil has natural skin-warming properties that get your blood flowing. That heat also gets you sweating, which helps reduce fluid build up and cleanses the body from the inside out.

  • Cedarwood oil stimulates the circulatory system as well as acts as an astringent to tone skin.

  • Cinnamon Bark oil stimulates the lymphatic system and improve the circulation in the blood vessels, thus helping expel toxins and reduce cellulite. It is generally used in massages with a carrier oil. But you can also take cinnamon tea regularly to complement the treatment. This tea can also help with your blood sugar levels.

(Note: The oil may inhibit the clotting of blood and cause drug interactions. Do not use in the case of blood disorders.)


Other useful oils include Clary Sage (should not be used if you are pregnant), Lemon, Green Mandarin, Wild Orange, and Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend (also great in a veggie cap, with a barrier oil to be taken internally to help suppress your appetite, and keep your metabolism going).




CELLULITE BODY OIL

  • 1 ounce glass bottle

  • Slightly less than 1 ounce of carrier oil (Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, etc)

  • 18 drops of essential oils for 2% dilution (see blends below)







DRY BRUSHING ESSENTIAL OIL BLENDS FOR CELLULITE

  • 9 drop Grapefruit

  • 5 drops Fennel

  • 4 drops Black Pepper


  • 8 drops Rosemary

  • 2 drops Lemongrass

  • 8 drops Juniper berry


  • 7 drops Cinnamon Bark

  • 7 drops Cedarwood

  • 4 drops Cypress


  • 4 drops Geranium

  • 12 drops Grapefruit

  • 2 drops Lemongrass






DIRECTIONS FOR DRY BRUSHING:

  1. To use with dry brushing, add 3-5 drops of essential oil to the palm of your hand. Glide the bristles of a dry brush across your palm, saturating the bristles with the essential oil blend.

  2. With dry skin, gently rub the bristle brush in circular, upward motions, followed by longer, smoother strokes.

  3. Begin at the feet and brush upward towards the heart (the lymph flows towards the heart, so it’s important that you brush in the same direction.) Move up to the lower legs, thighs, stomach, back and arms. Be cautious of softer and sensitive skin around the chest, and never brush over inflamed skin, sores or sun-burn.

  4. When you reach the chest and back, brush down toward the heart.

  5. Hop in the shower to rinse off dry skin cells and impurities.

  6. Follow up with a little coconut oil to nourish and moisturize the skin.

  7. NOTE: You can also apply to the skin by using as a massage oil or add a few drops to a bathtub of water. Rub any floating oil droplets into the skin as you soak.
